That&#8217;s a four-hour drive from my home in Seattle. However, in the 1975 out-of-print book &#8220;Minerals of Washington&#8221; by Bart Cannon, there is brief and ambiguous mention of some closer to Seattle in King County! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/partofthething.com\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-33.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1019\" height=\"888\" src=\"https:\/\/partofthething.com\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-33.png\" alt=\"Page from &quot;Minerals of Washington&quot; by Bart Cannon 1975\" class=\"wp-image-2362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/partofthething.com\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-33.png 1019w, https:\/\/partofthething.com\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-33-300x261.png 300w, https:\/\/partofthething.com\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-33-768x669.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1019px) 100vw, 1019px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Minerals of Washington, by Bart Cannon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Marten Creek, eh? This one sentence appears to be the sole reference for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mindat.org\/loc-17388.html\" target=\"_blank\">this mindat entry<\/a>, which appears to just be a random dot along the creek. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wta.org\/go-hiking\/hikes\/marten-lake\" target=\"_blank\">Marten Creek\/Lake is also a now-unmaintained trail in the Washington Trails Association guide<\/a>. So I figured, ok I&#8217;ll just go do the Marten Lake trail and take my Geiger counter and UV light and see if I happen upon any pegmatite with smoky quartz. So Waffles and I loaded into the Subaru and off we went. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Middle Fork road is totally paved these days, so there&#8217;s just about 0.5 miles of gravel at the end. Very easy access. The hike starts out as a walk on the road, and then a nice, fairly flat trail for 2.7 miles. It&#8217;s a bit ridiculous in that it starts out an OK climb but just gets steeper and steeper and steeper as you approach the top. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We did see some huge rocks along the way, and shot UV at them.
